Why Covers Matter...

Most guitar players focus on the pickup itself. Few realize the cover can have a dramatic impact on tone.

The earliest PAF humbuckers had 49.2mm string spacing and used thin nickel-silver covers made from specific alloys that allowed more of the pickup's natural voice to pass through. The result was the open, airy, harmonically rich tone heard on countless classic recordings.

Modern covers often use different alloys, thicker materials, or manufacturing methods designed for cost and consistency rather than a focus on the end result....your tone.

Many are also filled with wax during the potting process, creating an additional layer between the pickup and the strings.

The result is often a massive loss of clarity, harmonic content, touch sensitivity, and high-end openness.

That is why two otherwise identical pickups can sound surprisingly different simply by changing the cover.

Virgil Arlo PAF Covers were developed to recreate the tonal characteristics of the finest original PAF covers. They preserve warmth while allowing notes to breathe, improving clarity, harmonic complexity, and dynamic response without sacrificing the smooth character players expect from a covered humbucker.

For many players, it is the missing link between a decent humbucker and great PAF tone.

Virgil Arlo PAF Tone

You know it when you hear it...

It is about openness, warmth, and clarity. The way a note blooms after the pick attack, stays articulate, and responds naturally to your touch.

This is the tone players hear in the earliest covered PAF humbuckers. Warm but never muddy. Airy without becoming thin. Three-dimensional tonal character that modern pickups always seem to miss.

Pick lightly and the notes stay open and detailed. Dig in and the pickup delivers rich harmonic content with a smooth top end and clear low frequencies that never feel congested.

-Trusted by Grammy-winning composers
-Used by first-call session pros
-Built for players who demand more

You will commonly find these in the hands of players who rely on pro-level tone every day.

Transform Your Pickups

Through years of building pickups and working directly with players, we consistently see the same pickups receiving Virgil Arlo PAF covers.

-Gibson Burstbucker
-Gibson '57 Classic
-Lollar Imperial
-Fralin Pure PAF
-DiMarzio PAF Series

These are all respected pickups with strong followings. For many players, they already have the pickup they want.

The problem is often the cover & it's often filled with the wax the builder left behind.

Many modern covers use alloys that restrict high-frequency response and reduce harmonic complexity. Others are heavily wax-filled, further dampening the openness and air that made the earliest PAFs so special.

Players often assume they need a new pickup.

Many discover they simply needed a better cover.

That is usually when they end up here.

Vintage Tone at Your Fingertips

You will hear it quickly...

-Improved clarity and note separation
-More open high end with enhanced harmonic detail
-Greater touch sensitivity and dynamic response

That is what true vintage PAF tone feels like...

Original late-50s PAF covers are exceptionally rare and expensive. The alloys, construction methods, and tonal characteristics that made them special have largely disappeared from modern production.

Virgil Arlo PAF Covers were developed to recreate the openness, warmth, and harmonic complexity players associate with the finest original PAFs.

The result is a simple upgrade that can dramatically improve the voice of your favorite guitar, delivering vintage-inspired tone without replacing the pickups you already have.
